Woman Peacefully Poses In An Underwater Yoga Pose With A Manta Ray For Conservation Purposes

How do you feel about sliding up to a 1,500 pound giant marine animal? It’s scary, especially if that animal looks like it could swallow you whole within the blink of an eye. That’s what Amy Ippoliti did this past summer. The Yogi and Prana ambassador slipped into the Caribbean waters to join the giant manta rays. According to her, the experience left her in awe!  "I was like a kid in a candy shop. It was so exciting for me to jump into the water with these magnificent creatures. The abundance was just overwhelming."

The underwater rendezvous was meant to showcase the existence of an inter species connection between animals and man. She hopes this will help many people understand that its worth protecting and preserving this incredible animals. Manta rays are being harvested globally by organized fishing programs, and in unsustainable numbers. The fishermen want the gill rakers that the rays use to gather food and this has led to a booming gill rakers market in China due to their medicinal values.No proof however, is available to show that the gill rakers can cure any ailment.

Taro Smith, the man who took these shots, says that activists are of two types; those who wait patiently to become financially viable and those who use shock journalism to initiate the change they want. For five days, Amy and Taro worked with underwater photographer and conservationist Shawn Hendricks, Hanna Fraser, a professional mermaid and Louie Psihoyos, the director of The Cove, an Academy Winning film. They wanted to incorporate art with new conservation approaches. Ippolti was recruited as the face of this amazing project- to showcase her talents with an equally exceptional animal.

The photographers took test shots during the eight months she spent in Boulder, Colorado training, swimming and doing lots of breathing exercises. Then after floating around the Caribbean with the animals, they got the perfect shot. Smith’s perfect shot was a still of Ippoliti engaged peacefully in a yoga pose next to the manta ray. “There are others that might be more technically perfect,” he said “but that one captures this giant looping magnificent creature that most people are kind of afraid of.”

They hope that these pictures will draw people into their conservation efforts using curiosity rather than shock-and –awe tactics. To help protect, the marine giants, Ippoliti suggests the following:
  • If possible, do not eat fish and if you have to, use the Seafood Watch app to ensure you are only served sustainable species when shopping or eating out.
  • When buying pet food, read the labels to make sure that fish ingredients used are from sustainable species only. Do not flush down the toilet, commercial and non-biodegradable cat litter 
  • Do not go to restaurants that have shark-fin soup on their menu
  • Buy only organic produce. This will help you avoid pesticides used on regular plants that can run into the rivers and oceans.
  • Avoid purchasing food that is in plastic containers and always carry a re-usable bottle.
  • While at the beach, pick up liter in the water or on the sand.
  • Support organizations like the Manta Ray Of Hope, Wild Aid, Shark Savers and the Oceanic Preservation Society.

Rare Deep Sea-Creature Glows And Can Grow Up To 30 Metres Long

Australian Divers captured rare and incredible images of the pyrosome or Pyrostremma Spinosum, a sea creature at the coast of Tasmania. This creature is so rare that it’s been named  ‘Unicorn of the sea’. It can grow to 100ft in size (30 metres long), which is equivalent to two double decker buses that are laid end-to-end.  The Pyrosome has a translucent, hollow and cylindrical body made up of thousands of tiny clones that are called zooids. The zooids pull water through tubes, feed on plankton and then push back out the filtered water.

Each of the zooids is just a few millimeters in size. Tissue connects each of them and they move as one while inside the Pyrosome’s tube structure. The pyrosome can also be referred to as a sea squirt. They are pelagic in class which means they swim freely in open water than near land. They are rare to spot.

There is a hole that can be two meters wide at the pointed end of the pyrosome’s long tube. This opening is big enough to fit a full human. Scary! Rebecca Helm (Deep Sea News) says that “they’re giant, terrifying looking, and trolling through the depths of the ocean, waiting for you to swim in one end and get stuck.  Maybe. But fortunately, in addition to being slow moving filter feeders, they’re also delicate and fluffy.”

One of the divers described it by saying that “it felt like an exquisitely soft feather boa”. Michael Baron who is from the Eagle Hawk Dive Centre did a recording of the giant creature found in Tasman Peninsula, Australia. This area is among a few where “oceanic gelatinous plankton” can be found close to shore. Michael managed to also film salps which are similar to the pyrosome. The individuals inside it however, are larger than zooids in the pyrosome.
Eaglehawk Dive Centre claim in their YouTube page that: “Salps have much larger individuals than pyrosomes, individuals pump water through themselves. Colonies are formed of chains of individuals. Salps can form very high densities under good conditions, and are an important oceanic food source for fish.”

Plastics In The Ocean Are Disappearing Mysteriously And Scientists Believe These Could Be The Reasons Why

Since the 80’s, there has been an increase in the amount of plastics entering our oceans. However, when researchers tried to map out the ocean garbage, they found a smaller amount than they expected. On a study published on 30th June in the journal Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences, researchers said that "These studies suggest that surface waters are not the final destination for buoyant plastic debris in the ocean."

Where then could this plastic be going? Plastics that get into the ocean often get broken down by waves and the sun into small particles of about 1 centimeter or less. Scientists therefore expected to find many tiny pieces of around 1 millimeter or less, but most samples taken didn't have them. They are not sure as to where the plastic is disappearing to, but they have some theories on the same:
1. Shore deposition
One of the theories is that the plastics could be washed ashore. 
The theory however is problematic since it’s unlikely that smaller things alone only would wash ashore. “A selective washing ashore of the millimeter-sized fragments trapped in central areas of the open ocean is unlikely,” the report says.

2. Nanofragmentation
This is the theory that the small pieces of plastics could be undergoing degradation continuously hence making them smaller and undetectable. 
The problem with this theory however is that, the sun contributes to the degradation of the plastics and although this continually happens, no reason yet has been found to show that degradation has increased since the 80’s.  Plastics would only be broken down further if planktons or some sort of bacteria evolved to do it, or did it naturally. In fact, research has been done to back this up: “Recent scanning electron micrographs of the surface of microplastic particles showed indications that oceanic bacterial populations may be contributing to their degradation, potentially intervening in the fragmentation dynamics.

3. Biofouling
There are some non-parasitic plants that grow on other plants and oceanic epiphytes could be latching on the plastic as it floats.  This could lead to the plastics sinking since as the organisms continue accumulating on the plastic, they make it heavy.
This could be possible except for the fact that, previous studies done show that when a plastic with a plant growing on it sinks in the ocean, the parasitic plant dies and falls off. This causes the plastic to pop back up.

4. Ingestion
The scientists consider this the most likely scenario.  The ocean has tiny animals known as Zooplankton that are the size of the missing plastic. Fish that feed on these animals may mistake the plastics for food. These fish live in depths of between 200 and 1000 feet deep and migrate to the surface when they need to feed and this is where the plastic is. According to the researchers, if the plastics are consumed, they can stay in the fish’s stomach for a day or an year. They get ingested and removed as poop that sinks quickly.

The plastic fragments ingested by small fish can be transferred to larger predators, sink with the bodies of dead fish, or be defecated. Gut content of mesopelagic fish is evacuated as long viscous feces that assume spheroid shapes while sinking at high velocities (around 1,000 m⋅d−1). Hence, microplastic fragments could also reach the bottom via defecation, a proposition that requires further quantitative testing.

The answer to where these plastics are disappearing to could lie maybe in a combination of these four scenarios. If we ever want to clean up our oceans, we have to find the reason plastics are disappearing fast.

At Nearly 7 Miles Depth, The Mariana Trench Has Some Of The Scariest, Most Bizarre Creatures

Located in The Pacific Ocean, the Mariana Trench is the deepest part of any of the oceans in the world. It is 1,580 miles long with a maximum depth of 6.831 miles. Its depth makes it pitch black and the temperatures there are few degrees above freezing.  Strange and different sea creatures live here. According to scientists who’ve explored the trench, creatures living here have learned to live in different kinds of severe conditions. They can protect themselves from cold, light up the dark parts of the ocean and manage to evade even the sea’s scariest predators.

This terrifying creature measures between 8 and 13 feet. It was discovered first in 1898. The male’s weight can go up to 463 pounds. Those fangs look scary...

The hatchetfish produces its own light using special organs. They are mostly found at 600 to 4500 feet and this is why they need the protruding sensitive eyes.

It’s vaguely shaped like a football and uses a bulbous lure to draw its prey before using its jaws to snatch it up.

The frilled shark is prehistoric with 300 trident-shaped teeth that are neatly aligned in 25 rows. According to scientist, this beast takes 3 and a half years to give birth. It’s a gestation period record holder!

The Dumbo octopus earns its name from its ear-like fins. It lives at depths of between 10,000 to 11,000 feet. The Dumbo Octopus feeds on worms and other crustaceans found on the sea floor.

These creatures can be termed as the cutest on the Mariana Trench.

Their males grow to about ½ an inch in length while the female can go up to 8 inches. The right words to describe the male during breeding can only be ‘overly attached’. This is because it fuses itself onto the female and shares the female’s bloodstream just like a parasite. See, very overly attached!

The dragon fish produces its own light. To attract potential mates and prey, the dragon fish uses a flashing barbell that’s attached to its chin. This creature uses its pitch black stomach to hide unlucky prey.

This octopus has an incredible vision range due to its rotatable eyes that are on top of its long movable stalks. It appears ghost-like due to its transparent body.

It’s mostly found at depths of 2000 feet and is most notable for its highly sensitive eyes and transparent head. The barreleye has green lenses found above each of its eyes. These allow it to filter any light that makes it to those depths of the sea and helps it focus on the lights from its prey. Cunning creature!

The viperfish has teeth so long they can’t fit in its own mouth! They instead curve back towards its eyes. It’s found at 5,000 feet and to take out prey, it swims at high speeds and impales the victim using its fangs. They only grow to 12 inches in length but look terrifying.

The fangtooth has the largest teeth known in the ocean. Despite its fearsome weaponry, however, if it veered closer to the surface, it would be food for the tuna since it only grows to six inches in size.

They live in the deepest parts of the sea. Swarms of up to two inches long are found at 30,000 feet where food can rarely be found. They feed on plant and tree debris that make it to the sea bottom. They also digest what other fish consider trash using special enzymes produced in their guts.

They can be found at 9,000 feet and are carnivorous. The ping-pong tree can grow to a height of 20 inches.  They may not look dangerous on sight but they have tiny hair hooks that they use to catch small creatures passing by. Cells in the sponge, then slowly move towards the prey and digest it.

The enypniastes is a sea cucumber that lives at 16,400 feet. The mouth is the red area and around it are tentacles that scoop up from the sea floor, edible mud. It leaves nothing to the imagination as you can see.
