What Life Is Really Like In Space According To Astronaut Marsha Ivins

Marsha Ivins says that Earth’s view from space is incredible.  “It’s breathtaking. It’s surreal. It’s a “we’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto” kind of feeling.” But  55 days in space on five NASA missions, has taught her that it’s not just about the breathtaking moments, “It’s a mix of the transcendentally magical and the deeply prosaic.”. Sometimes its noisy, crowded and uncomfortable- it’s nothing glamorous but the view from up there is unbeatable!

For the two hours after the astronauts climb the shuttle, most of them take naps. They are strapped in like a sack of potatoes as the system goes through prelaunch checks. Occasionally, they have to wake up and say “loud and clear” or “Roger” but there’s really nothing to be worried or nervous about. The launch itself however is a whole other thing- “from the pad to orbit in 8.5 minutes, accelerating the entire time until you reach the orbital velocity of 17,500 mph. That is a ride.”

When in orbit, there is no gravity so the body fluids move towards your head. Your stomach goes flat and you get a great face lift. You tend to grow a foot or two and you feel long. “I thought, “Oh cool, I’ll be tall,” but of course everybody else was taller too.” It does have some disadvantages however; an enormous headache starts when the fluid shifts north and the body compensates by losing a liter of fluid during the first couple of days.

“You essentially pee the headache away. And a lot of people get nauseated. The way to feel better is to “lose up,” to convince your visual system that “up” is wherever you point your head and “down” is where your feet are.” You start getting adapted to Zero-g if you can do that and either go headfirst or earlobe first. Your body adapts on each flight but it may take a few days for your stomach to finally settle down.

Food can taste a little different on space. “I’d bring great chocolate with me and it would taste like wax—it was very disappointing,” she says. They cannot cook on the ISS or shuttle and therefore they either carry vacuum-packed food, free-dried food or Thermo-stabilized food. They add water to the food and warm it up in the oven.  Since there is no refrigerator on board, the fresh food goes bad fast and they make sure they eat anything fresh like fruits; oranges, apples and grapefruits, during the early days of the mission.

The strangest experience while in space is sleeping. It’s so easy to sleep on earth but in space, they strap their sleeping bags to the wall, floor or ceiling or anywhere and get in- just like camping.

“The bag has armholes, so you stick your arms through, reaching outside the bag to zip it up. You tighten the Velcro straps around you to make you feel like you’re tucked in. Then you strap your head to the pillow—a block of foam—with another Velcro strap, to allow your neck to relax. If you don’t tuck your arms into the bag, they drift out in front of you. Sometimes you wake up in the morning to see an arm floating in front of your face and think, “Whoa! What is that?” until you realize it’s yours.”

During most of her flights, she slept in the shuttle’s middeck. Nobody was working there when they were not doing an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), and it was like her own private bedroom. But it was the coldest part of the shuttle by around 20 degrees. She would wear four layers of clothes and tuck her arms into the bag. On some occasions, she would warm up a package of food and throw it into the sleeping bag like a hot water bottle.

“On the last two nights of my final flight, I slept on the flight deck, my sleeping bag strapped beneath the overhead windows. The position of the shuttle put Earth in those windows, so when I woke up the whole world was out there in front of me—in that moment, just for me alone.”

Shuttle flights are always busy because they have to carry out daily maintenance, experiments, robotic operations and EVAs. It’s a lot of hard work and can get stressful and scary in its own way. If you screw up, people all over the world are watching. But she also found it relaxing. When on earth, one is never out of touch. You can be reached at all times but while in space you get out of reach. You can communicate via email but there are no everyday worries like whether you fed the dog or paid the bills.

“I felt like everyday things just stopped at the edge of the atmosphere. I was totally liberated from Earth. But all those earthly concerns reattached as soon as we re-entered. By the time I landed, my brain was mapping out a to-do list.”

When you return to earth, the inner ear that keeps you balanced on earth becomes a little sensitive due to gravity. It’s been turned off during the trip to space and you have to learn how to move in a gravity field because your balance is off. Muscles that have been dormant for weeks also have to reengage so that you can do everyday stuff like stand, walk and hold things. Sometimes it takes days or even weeks to get the earth legs back.

“It was hard, it was exciting, it was scary, it was indescribable. And yes, I’d go back in a heartbeat,” She says.

Shadow Of Alien Like Creature Sighted On The Moon

Conspiracy theorists have always been fascinated by dark secrets they believe are hidden on the moon. One YouTube user for example, believes he has discovered from Google Moon images, an alien like figure lurking in the deep crates of the satellites. Wowforreel shared a video that shows what he terms as an alien like figure seen walking on the surface of the moon. In less than a month, the figure has been seen more than two million times. It can also be seen on Google Moon at 27°34’26.35″N 19°36’4.75″W. The most likely explanation however, for this sighting would be a psychological phenomenon known as Pareidolia. It’s how the brain responds when it sees faces and significant objects in random stimulus.

Paranormal explainer, Tom Rose, explains that the figure resembles what the ancient statute ‘The Colossus of Rhodes’ was believed to have looked like before being felled by an enormous earthquake in 226 BC.

Wowforreel started his investigations on the shadow after Jasenko, another web user, gave him an online tip. “An irregularly shaped dark spot he noticed on Google Moon looks like it could be a cast shadow from a massive standing object, or figure,” he told UFO Sighting Daily. “At first I thought maybe it was something drawn into the picture but after going to Google Moon, whatever it is or isn't…uh, is there.”

NASA provides the images used to create lunar images for Google Moon but they haven’t commented yet on what they think the image shows.

This is not the first time Wowforreel has used Google’s moon series to spot strange images. In January, he showed controversial images that showed what was believed to be a secret spaceship or alien base on the moon.  Spotted on Google’s moon map were rows of seven light dots along the edges of a triangular anomaly.

Is it just a weird looking crater? or is it something else?,” he asked. “It is really there, not faked and I have no clue what it is. I found nothing else like it in any of the other craters.”
Tech and Gadget News say that, “The gigantic shape actually looks like the leading edge of an immense, triangular space ship, similar to, so far, super secret stealth aircraft technology, but is much larger than any airplane ever built on Earth.  The regularly spaced, circular promontory shapes which make up the seven points on the perfectly formed triangle wedge seem to be intelligently designed. To date, no other feature has ever been discovered which matches this shape on the moon, or any other planet observed by satellite or exploratory rover. The anomaly is so huge, it's possible it is some sort of moon base used as a facility for storing and launching alien UFO spacecraft.

Wowforreel also claimed he found a mystery structure on Earth similar to that one nestled under Antarctica ice. “It is also a triangular shape, measuring 125 by 90mtres. It is unique in the area,” he said.
Most of the excited reports on alien life on our solar system have been due to light tricks in space. Paranormal researchers in November spotted fossilized iguana evidence on Mars.

UFO Sightings Daily spotted the mysterious object. They uncovered it in Nasa’s photo archives. “This is not the first animal found on Mars, actually there have been about 10-15 to date,’ Mr Warring told agoracosmopolitan.com, a news site. “I even found a rock that moved four times in four photos...then vanished on the fifth.”
Recently, the German Aerospace Centre youth portal, DLR_next, pointed out a ‘human face’ on the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko Rosetta comet.

The Pareidolia phenomenon is a form of apophenia; people seeing connections or patterns in data that is random and unconnected. The human eye is capable of spotting faces in their environment. This helps them point out friends in a crowd, determine how fast a car is moving and see patterns. Scientists believe that we use this ability often to ‘enrich our imagination’ and recognize meaningful shapes, even those that are not there.

Watch This Amazing Time Lapse View of The Earth As Seen From The International Space Station

Incredible videos have been made with photos from the International Space Station but none is quite like this one.

This is Our Planet” was created by Tomislav Safundžic using photos and videos he took from the Image Science and Analysis Laboratory at the NASA-Johnson Space Center. He is a photography and video enthusiast from Croatia. He pieced together the photos and videos, to produce a wonderful time-lapse video that shows the earth as viewed from the International Space Station. Edited by the XX to “intro”, the video shows a spectacular view of the planet, stars, aurora, thunderstorms, night lighting and some parts of the ISS.

The ISS orbits the earth at approximately 250 miles altitude on average. It travels at 17,500 miles per hour and averages 16 trips in a day.
Safundžic has many amazing photos on his page and you can check them out. You can also watch “The Journey Home”, a video created by Col. Ron Garan after he spent 178 days in space. It also includes time spent aboard the ISS.

The International Space Station Has A 24/7 Live Stream

The International Space Station (ISS) is a habitable satellite launched on October 31 2000. It’s the longest on record for having continued human occupation. It’s an observatory and research laboratory situated in low earth orbit. The crew on board conducts experiments in Physics, Astronomy, biology among other things. The ISS orbits the earth after every 90 minutes and by 2010, it had orbited almost 60,000 times, which accrues to 1.5 billion miles. It’s about the size of a U.S. football field with a weight of over 400,000 kilograms. The ISS can be seen without a telescope some few hours before sunrise or after sunset.

Astronauts live on the ISS in a shift system and conduct various valuable experiments that can’t be performed on earth. The space station offers them an opportunity to conduct research in zero gravity and out of the atmosphere. It also offers a long term environment for decades of studies to be performed. Experiments carried out cover wide areas of scientific research, including life sciences, space medicine, material sciences, physical sciences, meteorology and space weather.
Live streaming video by UstreamThe Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer mounted on the ISS, for example, is used to search for dark matter evidence and measure the antimatter in cosmic rays. This information helps in the understanding of the universe formation. The scientists at NASA have compared it to the Hubble Telescope.

Life is inhospitable in space due to factors like absolute zero temperatures, microgravity, intense radiation fields and high vacuum. Some simple life forms, however can survive this environment. They are referred to as extremophiles (‘extreme lovers’ in Greek) and they survive in desiccation- an extremely dry state.

The scientists have also conducted research on the long term effects of space exposure on the human body. They discovered that they vary greatly and have major effects on the body. Data collected as of 2006, on muscular atrophy and bone loss, suggests that astronauts would experience movement problems and a significant risk of fractures, if they landed on a planet after being on a lengthy interplanetary cruise (even if this was a short six months Mars journey).

That is just some of the research being carried out on the ISS. Take a look at the live stream and check out the crew while on duty. In case the stream displays a black/blue screen, then a temporary loss of signal has been experienced and you can always check back later.
