There Is A Hospital In Australia Takes Care Of Abandoned Baby Bats

We normally view bats as vampiric and terrifying creatures but seeing these tiny baby bats being fed from bottles and wrapped in blankets, made us go batty on them. These abandoned baby bats at the Tolga Bat Hospital, Atherton, Australia, proof that these creatures can be as adorable as any puppy or kitten. The fruit bats are brought in when afflicted by the fatal tick paralysis- a disease that orphans over 300 baby bats each year. The baby bats are also brought in when their mothers become too sick to feed them or when their mothers die, mostly from the same disease.

Tick paralysis is known to kill hundreds of bats every year at the Atherton Tablelands. Tolga Bat Hospital acts as a community group that works to conserve the bats and their natural habitats. The hospital has volunteers who nurse the abandoned bats back to health and later release them to the world. The hospital is also a sanctuary for bats that have retired from zoos. 8 Amazing Stories Of People Who Survived Against All Odds

People always try to be prepared for disasters but sometimes, we find ourselves in situations we least expect. During these times, our will to survive is tested. We have heard of many heroic stories where people got lost for weeks, months or even years. When we finally find them, they have one very intriguing story that changes their whole outlook on life.

These 8 people have been in trying situations where no one would expect them to come out alive. Their stories are incredible and define motivation and inspiration. They encourage us to never give up no matter how high the odds are stuck against us.

1. He got lost in the desert and tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists. He was so dehydrated however, that the blood clotted his wounds. He was rescued 9 days later while 186 miles (299 km) away. He lived off bats, snakes and his urine and had lost 40lbs (18kg).
Mauro Prosperi

Mauro Prosperi is an endurance runner who took part in the Marathon Des Stables in 1994 in Morocco. Halfway through the 233 kilometre 6-day event, a sandstorm hit and he and his cousin James Duchkin lost their way. Prosperi got disoriented and ran in the wrong direction- 700 kilometers into Algeria. 36 hours later, he ran out of food and water and survived by drinking his own urine. He ate bats that resided in a mosque and the occasional snake he found in the desert.

He attempted to commit suicide by slitting his own wrists using a penknife. This attempt failed due to dehydration, which had caused the thickening of his blood and ultimately sealed the wound. 9 days later, a nomadic family found him and took him to an Algerian Military Camp and from there he was taken to a hospital. He had gone 186 miles off route and his body weight was 18kgs less.(source)

2. At 17 years old, he was the only survivor of a plane crash after he got ejected with his seat and landed upright in the middle of a street.
George Lamson Jr.

On January 21st 1985, George Lamson Jr. was on the Galaxy Airlines Flight 203 that crashed and burst into flames, about 2.4 km from the end of the runway. 71 people were aboard that flight but only three survived the impact. Unfortunately, one died on the 29th of January and the other on February 4th.  The only survivor was George Lamson Junior, who got thrown clear of the aircraft only to land upright, still seated on his seat, on the South Virginia Street. His father had been one of the three initial survivors but he succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital.(source)

3. For 133 days, Poon Lim was lost at sea in an eight feet raft. He drank the blood of birds and caught sharks using a nail, water jug and rope.
 Poon Lim

At 25 years, Poon Lim was appointed second steward on a British Merchant Ship. They were a crew of 55 when the ship left Cape Town on 23rd November 1942. A few days later, a Nazi U-boat torpedoed them. The ship was sinking and on seeing this, Poon jumped overboard. The ship sank into the ocean and poon tried to gasp for air in between the waves. He found a raft after two hours of struggle, swam to it and hauled himself on board.

Poon found some tinned biscuits, a metal water jug, a small supply of fresh water, some flares and an electric torch. He rationed himself and only ate two biscuits per day and drank few sips of the water. With the supplies he had, he calculated that he would survive a month but Poon knew he had to find land when no one rescued him after a month.

He used the wire from the electric torch and a biscuit as bait to catch fish. After catching the first fish, it became easier, since he could use pieces of it as bait for his next catch. He also caught sharks and seagulls and drank their blood. He used notches that he made in the wood to track the days he spent at sea. He also exercised by swimming twice a day and this also helped his muscles from atrophying. On his 131st day at sea, he saw the color of water change and saw more kelp and birds.

On the 133rd day, a small boat rescued him. He had crossed the Atlantic and was just at the mouth of the Amazon River. Poon had lost 10 kg but still managed to stay strong. He could walk unaided even after the whole ordeal. He holds the record for the longest survival on a life raft. He however hopes that no one ever finds themselves in a similar situation.(source)

4. While in high school, she was sucked out of an airplane after it got struck by lightning. Still strapped to her chair, she fell 3.2 kilometres onto the ground and lived. She was the only survivor and had to walk for 9 days to find civilization.

Koepcke’s plane fell 2 miles from the sky and crashed. She was surprisingly still strapped to her seatbelt when it did and survived with moderate injuries. She was lost in the jungle for 10 days looking for help, until a group of Peruvian lumberjacks found her.(source)

5. Skydiver Joan Murray approached ground at 80 miles per hour after her parachute failed, and she landed on fire ants.  The shock from being stung more than 200 times caused an adrenaline surge that kept her heart beating and allowed her to survive.

Joan Murray went skydiving on the 25th of September 1999 and jumped at 4400 meters. Unfortunately, her main parachute failed to open while her backup parachute quickly deflated after opening at 200 meters. She approached the ground at 130 km per hour and landed on an ant mound. According to doctors, the shock of more than 200 stings from the ants released an adrenaline surge that kept her heart beating.

She suffered serious injuries that shattered her right side of the body and knocked fillings from her teeth. She was in a coma for 2 weeks at the Carolinas Medical center but 17 blood transfusions and 20 reconstructive surgeries later, Murray survived.(source)

6. Police officer escaped a bullet thanks to a Nokia Lumia 520 that was in his pocket

A military police officer in Brazil had a Lumia 520 placed in his back pocket and “was taking his uniform to his mother to be washed when he arrived to find his parents being held hostage. The two criminals, seeing his uniform, opened fire. The officer fled and would have taken a round in the behind if it wasn’t for his mobile deflecting the bullet.”

The phone was completely destroyed but the officer was unscathed.(source)

7. A British marine flung himself back-first onto a grenade to save his fellow marines. The explosion threw him up in the air with his rucksack absorbing the blast. He got lucky and escaped only with a headache and a nosebleed.

30 year old Lance Corporal Mathew Croucher, from Solihull, West Midlands, accidentally triggered a trip wire while in Hemland Province, Afghanistan in 2008. He dropped to the ground immediately, lay across the grenade and got blown into the air as the grenade went off. He got the George Cross award, which is the highest decorations awarded due to acts of gallantry, for saving his comrades. He is among 20 living recipients who have received this award.  “All I could do at the moment was shout ‘grenade’ before diving on top of it,” he said.

He had crammed his bag with equipment that helped cushion the explosion. Three of his comrades only suffered cuts and bruises as L/Cpl Croucher got thrown into the air. “It was incredible. I escaped with only a nose bleed and a headache. “ (source)

8. For two months, this Swedish man survived in a car that had been snowed over. He fed on snow and survived due to the “igloo effect”
Peter Skyllberg

In February 2012, two snowmobiles found an abandoned car in Sweden’s icy northeast. They dug through the snow only to find a man lying on the backseat. Peter Skyllberg said that for 60 days he had been trapped inside the car and lived off snow. His rescuers doubted his account but scientists confirmed that it was possible Skyllberg survived through the ordeal by his body hibernating and an “igloo effect” created insulation in the car. Before His Death, Lockheed Senior & Former Area 51 Scientist Claimed Aliens, UFOs exist. Pictures Shown As Proof [Video]

Boyd Bushman, a scientist who worked for Lockheed Martin, claimed that aliens exist before he died on the 7th of August, 2014. He did this in a video that was posted shortly before he died. Boyd drew from his own experiences, revealing that there exist extraterrestrial beings in area 51. In an interview that is almost unbelievable, he claims that the government is hiding several technologies like anti-gravity.

Boyd had several patents that were attributed to him as a senior scientist at Lockheed Martin(This claim has been disputed though). His patents include a light beam that can find objects, a magnetic drive, a heat radiation detection system and a thermally energized electrical power source.

In the controversial video, Mr. Bushman says that there are Americans currently working on the UFOs from outer space, 24 hours a day. He claims that the aliens come from a planet known as Quintumnia which is 68 light years away. The aliens however, only take 45 minutes to get to our planet. He also claimed that a special flight path exists that gets the aliens from space to area 51.

The aliens at the base according to the video, are 230 years old and are five feet long (this is around 1.5 metres). They have five webbed toes and five fingers that are 30% longer than ours and communicate using telepathy. According to Mr. Bushman, scientists have for some time been reverse engineering the UFO technology and this includes the Roswell incident, where a flying saucer was accidentally shot down in 1947.

He says that he gave his camera to the aliens so they could get him pictures from their home world and he shows them off using some blurry images on the video. Mr. Bushman said that the scientists at area 51 are working with the Chinese and Russian counterparts, to develop an anti-gravity technology.

The claims have been met with derision and criticism. Some claim that the alien Bushman showed in the pictures, looks like an alien doll that was sold in shops some years ago. Bushman said that the security personnel had discredited him and even tried to prevent him from going public. He had also received death threats.
Boyd Bushman On Aliens and Area 51
UFO expert, Nigel Watson, who authored the Haynes UFO Investigation Manual, told Mail Online that “certainly, Bushman believed in what he was saying. As long ago as 2008 he passed a polygraph test, during which he claimed he had worked on anti-gravity projects, alien technologies and had even met and photographed an alien, and examined at least eight different types of alien spacecraft.”
Alejandro Rojas from the Open Minds says that “Like so many stories in the UFO field, Bushman’s is enigmatic. The whole affair could easily be written off as the delusional ramblings of an old man. The only thing that causes one to pause is Bushman’s background. Why would a high level scientist begin making up such wild stories? Did he actually work with Teller, and did he ever really go to Area 51? Or were these all tall tales told to him that he believed wholeheartedly? Now that Bushman has passed we may never know.”

So, what do you think, was Boyd Bushman delusional or was he telling the truth?

Steve Jobs Limited How Much Technology His Kids Could Access And Why You Should Too

If you are from the Gen-Y era, you must have given thought to how you would like to raise your kids in this day and age. Technology has undergone some great changes since the 90’s, when we were children. One question you must be battling with is whether you will introduce your kids to technological wonders like the iPad and iPod to your children?

Steve Jobs had a good reason as to why you shouldn’t. Nick Bilton, a New York Times Reporter said in a Sunday article that he once asked Jobs, “So your kids must love the iPad?”
Baby with iPad
“They haven’t used it,” Jobs responded. “We limit how much technology our kids use at home.”

In Silicon Valley, a trend of engineers and execs shield their children from technology. Their kids are sent to non-tech schools like the Waldorf School, Los Altos, where computers cannot be found. The schools focus only on hands-on learning. What makes those working in tech keep their kids from it? CEO of 3D Robotics, Chris Anderson, who is a father of five explained in The Times:
“My kids accuse me and my wife of being fascists and overly concerned about tech, and they say that none of their friends have the same rules…  That’s because we have seen the dangers of technology firsthand. I’ve seen it in myself, I don’t want to see that happen to my kids.”
Steve Jobs Family
Our current addiction to iPhones and other tech could be an indication that we are setting up our kids for incomplete, handicapped lives that are devoid of creativity, imagination and wonder, by hooking them onto technology during their early stages of life. Our generation was the last to play outside because there were no smart phones or laptops. Our learning was from hands-on interaction, movement and absorbing information through socializing with other humans and reading books. We didn’t have Google search!

We learnt in different ways and this has made us well-rounded individuals. Should we then be worried that we are robbing our kids the ability to play “candy crash” and snap chat all day because we didn’t give them a Smartphone or should we be worried that we may be robbing them of a less dependent and healthier environment if we do give them a Smartphone?

Next time you think about raising your kids, you may want to consider highly not giving them whatever fancy tech available as they grow up. You could play outside with them and take them on nature walks. They will probably totally hate you for it but will thank you later because I bet that’s what most of us feel now that we are older.

Woman Peacefully Poses In An Underwater Yoga Pose With A Manta Ray For Conservation Purposes

How do you feel about sliding up to a 1,500 pound giant marine animal? It’s scary, especially if that animal looks like it could swallow you whole within the blink of an eye. That’s what Amy Ippoliti did this past summer. The Yogi and Prana ambassador slipped into the Caribbean waters to join the giant manta rays. According to her, the experience left her in awe!  "I was like a kid in a candy shop. It was so exciting for me to jump into the water with these magnificent creatures. The abundance was just overwhelming."
Amy Ippoliti

The underwater rendezvous was meant to showcase the existence of an inter species connection between animals and man. She hopes this will help many people understand that its worth protecting and preserving this incredible animals. Manta rays are being harvested globally by organized fishing programs, and in unsustainable numbers. The fishermen want the gill rakers that the rays use to gather food and this has led to a booming gill rakers market in China due to their medicinal values. No proof however, is available to show that the gill rakers can cure any ailment.

Taro Smith, the man who took these shots, says that activists are of two types; those who wait patiently to become financially viable and those who use shock journalism to initiate the change they want. For five days, Amy and Taro worked with underwater photographer and conservationist Shawn Hendricks, Hanna Fraser, a professional mermaid and Louie Psihoyos, the director of The Cove, an Academy Winning film. They wanted to incorporate art with new conservation approaches. Ippolti was recruited as the face of this amazing project- to showcase her talents with an equally exceptional animal.

The photographers took test shots during the eight months she spent in Boulder, Colorado training, swimming and doing lots of breathing exercises. Then after floating around the Caribbean with the animals, they got the perfect shot. Smith’s perfect shot was a still of Ippoliti engaged peacefully in a yoga pose next to the manta ray. “There are others that might be more technically perfect,” he said “but that one captures this giant looping magnificent creature that most people are kind of afraid of.”
Amy Ippoliti

They hope that these pictures will draw people into their conservation efforts using curiosity rather than shock-and –awe tactics. To help protect, the marine giants, Ippoliti suggests the following:
  • If possible, do not eat fish and if you have to, use the Seafood Watch app to ensure you are only served sustainable species when shopping or eating out.
  • When buying pet food, read the labels to make sure that fish ingredients used are from sustainable species only. Do not flush down the toilet, commercial and non-biodegradable cat litter
  • Do not go to restaurants that have shark-fin soup on their menu
  • Buy only organic produce. This will help you avoid pesticides used on regular plants that can run into the rivers and oceans.
  • Avoid purchasing food that is in plastic containers and always carry a re-usable bottle.
  • While at the beach, pick up liter in the water or on the sand.
  • Support organizations like the Manta Ray Of Hope, Wild Aid, Shark Savers and the Oceanic Preservation Society.
